HOME OF OLD ZAGORJE GRAPE VARIETIES

From vineyards on the slopes to the wine cellar where each harvest finds its own character - welcome to Vitus, the home of old Zagorje grape varieties.

The Vitus winery in Sveti Križ Začretje brings together vineyards, a production and archive wine cellar, a tasting room, and a wine shop. Here, indigenous varieties, from Belina starohrvatska to Modra kosovina, make their journey from vine to bottle in the hands of people who have known them since the first planting.

Vineyards

Across more than 10 hectares and around 40,000 vines, we grow varieties that shaped Zagorje viticulture for centuries: Belina starohrvatska, Svetokriška belina, Dišeća ranina, Modra kosovina, and Volovina crvena. Alongside them, international varieties are also present: Graševina, Rhine Riesling, and Chardonnay - complementing the range and serving as a base for blends.

Our vineyards are not just scenery; they are working vineyards from which the wine comes. They were planted on the slopes of Zagorje, where a large vineyard does not appear overnight, but is built row by row, hill by hill. More than 100,000 vine grafts, mostly indigenous, have been produced in-house, allowing us to cover the entire journey from planting material to finished wine.

Cellar

The production cellar, with a capacity of 100,000 litres, is equipped for a controlled process from grape to bottle. There is also an archive wine cellar, where wines and memories of harvests age, as well as a tasting room and wine shop featuring local Zagorje products.

Belina is the thread that connects everything, from the vineyards to the cellar. Grapes from our sites arrive here, where they become wines that clearly carry the signature of Zagorje. The approach is the same for every variety in the cellar: modern technology and the best of professional knowledge in service of the vine, never the other way around.

The Face Behind the Cellar

From the very beginning, both in the cellar and in the vineyards of Vitus Vina, there was Mladen Kantoci - an oenologist and agronomist from a family that has lived with the vine and wine for generations. With him, a conversation about wine is never only about structure and acidity; it always turns to the vintage, the weather, the terroir, to everything that cannot be seen in the glass but can be felt within it. Once you hear him speak about Belina or Modra kosovina, it becomes clear that, for him, wine is far more than a profession.

His signature can be recognized from one vintage to the next: fresh, drinkable wines with a clear character. Wines that belong at the table, not in a display case.
